Such imaginings make me very sad. Still, it would have been
fascinating had The Who continued intact through the 80s and hopefully
into the 90s if not beyond.

Keith left a tremendous hole when he died. Very sad.

I wonder if it's true, as Pete has said, that Keith had been sober for
months at the time of his death?

If Pete said that, he was mistaken. He was seen drinking champagne at
a party the night he died.

Maybe he meant sober for Keith, i.e. not falling-down sloshed.

According to Entwistle, that's how he was on the last drumming he ever
did, a dubbing session for the drum break on "Won't Get Fooled Again"
in The Kids Are Alright movie.

Brian,

Did John Entwistle say Keith was drunk or sober for that dubbing
session?

Also he supposedly drank a bottle of champagne after returning from
the party.

I don't where Pete comes up with some of his stuff.

I'd want to know who says Keith was drinking that night and what grounds
there are for us to believe them, as opposed to why Pete thinks Keith had
been on the wagon for awhile. Pete might be wrong, he sometimes says goofy
things, but I'd still want to know what credible evidence there is that Pete
is wrong about this. If it boils down to Keith was seen with a drink in
front of him that night, I've seen recovering alcoholics put away a lot of
ginger ale in an evening just to keep from thinking about drinking. Autopsy
results showing he had alcohol in his system would be conclusive, but all
I've seen was mention of the massive overdose of prescribed sedatives.

There are photographs available of Keith's last night with a drink in
his hand. Many sources (including Dave Marsh and Richard Barnes) say
it was champagne. His girlfriend, Annette Walter-Lax, saw him
drinking champagne while eating the steak she herself had made for
(what turned out to be) his last meal. Is that enough evidence for
you?

As I said, I've seen photos of Keith on his last night and there were
glasses full of something on the table in front of him, perhaps even in his
hand. If eye witnesses say he was drinking alcohol that night then that is
indeed powerful evidence. I'm just curious as to what led Pete to think
Keith hadn't been drinking for months.
